Story of Bhagwati Tulsi

Once Devraj Indra went to Kailash with Devguru Brihaspati to see Lord Shiva.  Mahadev should have taken the test of both, so he changed his form and became an Avadhoot.  There was no clothes on his body.

His body was blazing like a burning fire and looked extremely frightening.  Avadhoot stood in the way of both.  When Indra saw a strange man standing in the way, he was shocked.

Indra began to take pride in being a Devraj.  He asked that fierce man who are you?  Lord Shiva is currently residing on Kailash or is on a tour somewhere.  I have come to see him.

Indra asked many questions but he remained silent like male yogis.  Indra felt that an ordinary creature was insulting him.  The ego of being Devraj grew in his mind which turned into anger.

Indra said that even on my repeated requests, you are insulting me by not saying anything.  I punish you now.  Saying this Indra lifted the thunderbolt.  Lord Shiva made the thunderbolt at the same time erected.

Indra's arm got stiff.  Lord Avadhoot turned red with anger.  Seeing the flame of anger on his face, Brihaspati understood that such a fierce form cannot belong to anyone other than Mahadev.

Brihaspati Shivastuti started singing.  He also made Indra lie down at the feet of Mahadev and said Lord Indra is lying at your feet, he is taking refuge in you.  The fire emanating from your forehead is rising to burn them.  We protect the refugees.  Brihaspati requested that your blessings always shower on the Lord's devotees.  You are devotee Vatsal and omnipotent.  You should give place to this effulgence somewhere else so that Indra's life is protected.

Lord Rudra said Jupiter, I am very happy on you.  Because of giving life to Indra, you will also have a name of Jeeva.  The deities cannot bear the heat of this fire emanating from my third eye.  That's why I'll leave it far away.

Mahadev, holding that spark in his hand, threw it into the sea.  As soon as it was thrown there, the brilliance of Lord Shiva immediately transformed into a child.  Due to its origin from the Indus, its name Sindhuputra Jalandhar became famous.

Jalandhar, also known as Shankhchud, was born from the effulgence of Shiva and hence was endowed with supreme powers.  He was more powerful than the gods.  He was born with the brilliance that was about to destroy Indra, so the Asuras made him their kingdom.  Mahadev disappeared after performing this Leela in Avadhoot form.  Indra's pride was also shattered, God's vision was also seen.

There is a very popular story related to Tulsi.  The divine Leela story of her incarnation has also been made in Shrimad Devi Bhagwat Purana.  Once Shiva threw his effulgence into the sea.  A majestic child was born to him.  This boy later became a mighty demon king by the name of Jalandhar.  The name of its capital was Jalandhar Nagari.

Daityaraj Kalnemi's daughter Vrinda was married to Jalandhar.  Jalandhar was a Maharakshasa.  In the matter of his power, he fought with the desire to get Mata Lakshmi, but being born from the ocean, Mata Lakshmi accepted him as her brother.  After being defeated from there, he went to Mount Kailash with the desire to get Goddess Parvati.

Lord Devadhidev took the form of Shiva and went near to Mother Parvati, but the mother immediately recognized him with the power of her yoga and disappeared from there.

Goddess Parvati got angry and narrated the whole story to Lord Vishnu.  Jalandhar's wife Vrinda was a very pious woman.  Jalandhar was neither killed nor defeated by the power of his Pativrat Dharma.  That is why in order to destroy Jalandhar, it was very necessary to break Vrinda's pativrata religion.

That is why Lord Vishnu disguised as a sage reached the forest, where Vrinda was traveling alone.  There were also two elusive demons with the Lord, seeing whom Vrinda became frightened.  The sage consumed both of them in a moment in front of Vrinda.  Seeing his power, Vrinda asked about her husband Jalandhar who was fighting with Mahadev on Mount Kailash.

The sage revealed two apes from his illusionary trap.  The head of Jalandhar was in the hand of one monkey and the torso in the hand of the other.  Seeing this condition of her husband, Vrinda fell unconscious.  On regaining consciousness, she begged the sage god to revive her husband.

The Lord again attached Jalandhar's head to his body with his illusion, but he himself also entered the same body.  Brinda did not realize the slightest of this deceit.  Vrinda started behaving virtuous with the God who became Jalandhar, due to which her chastity was dissolved.  As soon as this happened, Vrinda's husband was defeated in the Jalandhar war.

When Vanda came to know about all this Leela, she got angry and cursed Lord Vishnu to be a rock and she herself became a sati.  Where Vrinda was consumed, a Tulsi plant grew there.  Lord Vishnu said to Vrinda, 'O Vrinda.  You have become more dear to me than Lakshmi because of your chastity.  Now you will always be with me in the form of Tulsi.  Whoever marries Tulsi with my Shaligram form will get immense fame in this world and the hereafter.

In the house where there is Tulsi, even the messengers of Yama cannot go untimely.  Bathing in the waters of Ganga and Narmada and worshiping of Tulsi are considered equal.  No matter how sinful a person may be, at the time of death, one whose life goes out by keeping Tulsi and Ganga water in his mouth, he is freed from sins and reaches Vaikunth Dham.  The person who performs Shradh for his ancestors in the shade of Tulsi and Amla, his ancestors attain salvation.

This land of the same demon Jalandhar is famous by the name Jalandhar.  The temple of Sati Vrinda is located in Mohalla Kot Kishanchand.  It is said that there was an ancient cave at this place, which went straight to Haridwar.
